Councillors vote not to back Dana in Presidential campaign

County Councillors voted this afternoon not to nominate Dana Rosemary Scallon for the Presidency of Ireland. 14 councillors voted against the proposal to support her bid, with 8 in favour and 3 abstentions. Responding to the news, Dana said she will not abandon her presidential ambitions and will continue to look for support from other local authorities. She needs the backing of four county councils to contest the election. Almost half of Fine Gael`s members in Kerry County Council supported Dana`s bid, ignoring a directive from their party headquarters in Dublin asking them not to back the former MEP.
