Councillor calls for social houses to have downstairs bedrooms

Social houses in Kerry need to have downstairs bedrooms.

That’s according to Councillor Michael O’Shea, who says ground floor accommodation is very important in new three or four-bedroom social houses.

All new two-storey, three and four-bedroom homes in Kerry have bedrooms on the upper floor.

The Fianna Fáil councillor says many occupants, who suffer with disabilities, have requested homes with downstairs bedrooms due to accessibility issues.

Kerry County Council says the design of houses requires the most efficient use of space; this results in all bedrooms being placed on the first floor.

However, it says building requirements do consider accessibility issues.

In such cases, the council says single story accommodation is preferable for some occupants; this does result in a larger dwelling footprint and increased costs.
