Kerry County Council is to look at developing facilities to house cremation urns in cemeteries.

Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen says there’s growing demand for these Columbarium walls, as more and more people are choosing to be cremated after death.

He says there’s a lack of space in some Kerry burial grounds, especially in Aghadoe in Killarney, and this could be a solution; instead of using a burial plot, the urn would be stored in one these walls.

Kerry County Council says developing facilities to house ashes in burial grounds is an objective in the County Development Plan, and they’ll look at this proposal.

Cllr Connor-Scarteen says these walls would be cost effective not only for the council but also for the families of the deceased.
