Consultants recommend investment in sludge disposal

Over 12 and a half million euro will be spent by the council on sludge management over the next 20 years. A plan presented to councillors by consultants recommends investment in infrastructure and resources in management of the municipal sludges produced in the county. It’s estimated that almost 200 thousand tonnes of dry matter sludge will be produced in Kerry annually for the next 20 years however agricultural sludges will account for over 96 per cent of this. The report found that the most environmentally desirable disposal route for the sludges is disposal to land. However, there was some concern amongst councillors about the transport of the waste.
