Members of the Killarney Municipal District have approved the construction six apartments in the town.
At yesterday’s monthly meeting, there was unanimous approval for the demolition of a derelict building and the construction of a new apartment complex in Pinewood, Killarney.
The development comprises four 1-bed and two 2-bed apartments, with floor areas ranging from 49-66 square metres, and eight parking spaces.
According to the manager’s report, the average waiting time for this type of accommodation in Killarney is now in excess of ten years.
Following public consultation earlier this year, two submissions in support of the project were received.
Councillor Michael Gleeson says the additional housing capacity is badly needed in the town, while Councillor Maura Healy-Rae says the derelict property on the site has been an eyesore for some time.
Cathaoirleach of the district John Sheahan says the council must do everything it can to lessen the housing crisis and he called for additional capacity to be provided throughout the town.
Kerry County Council says it hopes to begin construction in March of 2019.
