Cllr says slurry spreading season is foolish carry on

A Kerry County Councillor says farmers are the best judge of when the slurry spreading season should start.

Under Department of Agriculture regulations, farmers are restricted to certain dates when they can spread slurry on their land; this is to prevent possible heavy rain washing the substance into water courses.

Cllr Johnny Healy-Rae says this is “foolish carry on” as there could be great weather before that date but farmers cannot spread.

The Kilgarvan councillor added farmers can apply for a derogation but all that happened was men in white wellingtons turned up on their farms.
