Claims of Kerry employers employing cheaper labour from abroad

Some Kerry employers have a policy of not hiring Irish workers because they can source cheaper labour from abroad, according to the trade union Siptu. Andrew McCarthy of Siptu says some bosses in the tourism and building sectors deliberately avoid employing Irish people as they would be aware of their working rights and entitlements. He says this has led to the exploitation of non-national workers. But the Irish Hotel Federation denies the claims made by Siptu. Chairman of the Kerry branch, Pat Chawke, says it’s not true that foreign workers are being employed at the expense of Irish workers.
