It’s been claimed cars were damaged during mass in Lyreacrompane earlier this year.
Kerry County Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae made the claim at the recent Joint Policing Committee meeting, when putting queries to members of An Garda Siochana in the county.
Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae believes there’s a lack of garda visibility in the county, particularly in rural areas such as Lyreacrompane.
He claims that, during the summer, a parishioner had to stay outside weekend mass there due to cars being damaged while mass was being said.
The independent councillor said there’s a lack of fear on behalf of offenders due to a perceived lack of garda visibility, and he’s called for more members to be stationed across the county.
He added that it’s a sad indictment of society if parishioners cannot attend mass without fear of their cars being damaged in the meantime.
Sean Roche, representing a number of community groups in South Kerry, also spoke; he asked the chief superintendent if it’s possible for garda patrol cars to travel through rural areas more often, especially over the winter months.
