A South Kerry father who’s campaigning for free primary school education says there’s an inherent contradiction in the State’s position.
Article 42.4 of the Constitution guarantees that the state shall provide for free primary education.
However, John Smith from Mastergeehy says this pledge is undermined by the fact that parents have to pay for school books.
He and his wife, Karen, are calling on the Minister for Education, the President and Attorney General to intervene so that school book rental schemes would be entirely state funded.
John Smith says the State is not living up to its constitutional guarantee of free education yet will prosecute parents who do not send their children to school.
