There are calls for Kenmare Wastewater Treatment Plant to be upgraded.
An Environmental Protection Agency report undertaken in July showed the plant was “significantly overloaded” and was struggling to deal with the volume of wastewater.
They’ve told Irish Water the plant, which is on the current Capital Investment Programme, needs to be upgraded urgently and should be given greater priority.
Councillor Patrick Connor-Scarteen, who was speaking after Kerry County Council had to close two popular bathing locations due to a discharge of raw sewage from the plant last Thursday, says it’s ridiculous such a situation happened.
The Fine Gael Councillor says an upgrade may take two-to-three years, but in the meantime, water quality in Kenmare Bay needs to be monitored frequently.
