Calls for the government to intervene over potential job losses in Liebherr

There are calls for the government to intervene over potential job losses in Liebherr.

Staff in Fossa have been informed they will be put on a three-day week from September to December at the crane manufacturing facility.

Yesterday, it was confirmed SIPTU and Liebherr management have agreed to mediation.

Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District John Sheahan says he’s hopeful talks will lessen the number of potential job losses in the company.

The Fine Gael Councillor adds the government should offer assistance at this juncture.

Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris says Liebherr is vital not just to Killarney, but also to Fenit.

He says the company’s track record in Kerry has been exceptional for decades, and any job losses will affect the entire county.

Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae says any jobs losses would adversely impact on many people throughout Killarney and Kerry, many of whom have families and mortgages.

He believes Irish contractors could assist Liebherr as the company is based in the South-West, closer to Irish construction works than any international manufacturers.
