Calls for reopening of sexual assault treatment unit

A call has been made for the public to lobby politicians in the county to get funding to re open the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit at Kerry General. The call was made following the treatment of an alleged rape victim at the South Infirmary in Cork. A man in his thirties was arrested by Gardai in Killarney in connection with the incident. The alleged attack occurred between 11 am and mid night on bank holiday Monday on Chapel Lane in the town. The man has been released and a file is to be sent to the DPP.Director of the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre Vera O Leary says the alleged victim should not have been forced to travel to Cork. Meanwhile Gardai in Killarney are appealing for anyone who has any information on the alleged rape to come forward. In particular they want to speak to a taxi driver and another man who came to the assistance of the alleged victim.Gardai say they also believe a taxi driver may also be able to help them with their inquiries.
