There have been calls for Kerry County Council to bring the Old Pier at Blennerville into public ownership.

Tralee Fine Gael Councillor Jim Finucane tabled a motion on the issue at the Council’s recent monthly meeting.

However the Council stated the development of the Old Pier had not been identified in the Kerry Tourism Strategy.

Kerry County Council said consideration was given by the former Town Council to compulsorily acquire the site over 20 years ago – but there were significant legal constraints.

The Council said it also has responsibility for the operation of 59 piers and slipways located around the county.

Therefore costs associated with these piers – including maintenance, provision of tourist moorings, aids to navigation and pontoon maintenance – fall within its remit.

Kerry County Council stated it could only give consideration to this proposal if there was a specific tourism potential and the reasonable prospect of a funding stream.
