Call for council to declare war on increasing incidents of illegal dumping

There’s been a call for Kerry County Council to declare war on the increasing incidents of illegal dumping.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Michael Cahill says it’s becoming a major problem throughout the county, and something needs to be done now.

The council says it has a Litter Management Plan in place, which aims to tackle the problem; last year it investigated 676 cases of littering, resulting in 71 on-the-spot fines and nine prosecutions.

Kerry County Council has introduced a charge for recycling paper, plastic bottles and newspapers, and Cllr Cahill believes this is causing an increase in illegal dumping.

He feels awareness and education are the only ways it’ll be tackled.
