Ballydesmond woman awarded her high school diploma in America at the age of 107

A 107-year-old  Ballydesmond woman who left school at the age of 12 has been awarded her high school diploma in the US.

Hanna Lovett emigrated to America in 1928, where barring a short period when she returned to Ireland, settled down and raised her family.

Hanna, whose maiden name was Riordan, published her memoir a number of years ago and said her one regret was never having an education.

Hanna’s daughter, Ann, decided to approach the principal of their local high school in Mattituck, Long Island, New York.

Ann asked him would it be possible to award Hanna with an honorary diploma and was delighted when he agreed.

Ann Lovett says her mother Hanna is very proud of being from the Kerry side of Ballydesmond.

She says Hanna is very attached to her Kerry and Sliabh Luachra roots.
