Ballybunion hotel development decision is deferred

A decision on a controversial hotel development in Ballybunion has been deferred again. The 25 million euro project on the site of the old castle green was first submitted for planning last year. Planners want more information before they make a final decision on what has been a contentious site in Ballybunion. Six years ago, Developer John O`Connor ran into strong opposition when he wanted to build 51 self-catering apartments. It was appealed to an Bord Pleanala in 1999 and the objectors were successful. The developer was back a year later with a scaled down plan and again it was turned down by the appeals board. At this point, John O`Connor sold off the site to an American consortium which wants to build an 80-room hotel. It could now be next year before the future of the site is decided.
