Arts Council Director disagrees with cessation of tax excemption

A director of The Arts Council says she would not agree with the cessation of any tax exemption for artists in the country. Noelle Campell Sharpe is also a founder of Cill Rialig, an artists retreat in Ballinskelligs. She says there is always people who will exploit the exemption but there would be a mass exodus of artists from this country if it were to be scrapped. The measure was introduced by the Minister for Finance Charlie Haughey in the 1980’s. Ms Campell Sharpe says there is possible alternatives for those in the higher pay scale.
