Heavy schoolbags are contributing to traffic congestion in Killarney.
That’s the view of the Killarney MD Area Engineer John Ahern, who was responding to queries on traffic management in the town from a number of councillors.
Councillor Maura Healy-Rae suggested the most suitable area for a multi-storey car park is in the Glebe Car Park, while Cathaoirleach John Sheahan enquired about the proposed new car park at Rock Road.
Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil councillor Niall Kelleher asked the council for a progress report on the Traffic Management Review.
MD Manager Angela McAnallen said all short-term objectives from the review are either complete, ongoing or planned, however, the council can’t have all the solutions right away.
Area Engineer John Ahern claimed that since schools have returned, children are being driven relatively short distances as their schoolbags are too heavy.
He adds there’s no “beating around the bush” in relation to traffic issues in the town.
Mr Ahern said 19,000 vehicles use the bypass every day, and until an outer ring road is constructed, there’s no easy answer to traffic congestion in Killarney.
