The annual Daniel O’Connell Summer School will take place in Cahersiveen and Derrynane this weekend.
The festival begins today and will include a range of high profile speakers.
The annual event will crown an important year for South Kerry, which also hosted the royal visit and Cabinet meeting earlier this year.
The festival will open in Cahersiveen today and will take place in Derrynane House tomorrow.
This year’s line-up will reflect diversity with lectures on the history of Kerry as well as the history and politics of Ireland, according to the School’s Director and UCD historian Professor Maurice Bric.
The highlight of the weekend will be the Daniel O’Connell lecture which will be given by TD Micheal Martin in the format of a wide-ranging interview.
This will be conducted by the well-known broadcaster and journalist Olivia O’Leary.
Guest speakers this weekend include Professor Yvonne Galligan of Queen’s University Belfast, Dr Martin Manseragh and Professor John Coakley.
Cahersiveen native and international baritone Dr Gavan Ring will host a musical lecture tomorrow.
Various discussions focusing on wide ranging topics will take place this weekend.
They will include the strong tradition of folklore and Irish-language literature, travelling in O’Connell’s time and on the role which women played in O’Connell’s various campaigns.
The ways women have made an impact in Ireland since they were included in the vote in 1918, will also be discussed.
