An Taisce speaks out against plans for the Great Blasket.

An Taisce is coming out against the way plans for development on the Great Blasket are happening. Four separate applications have been lodged for a campsite and renovations to houses by Blascaoid Mor Teoranta. The Heritage Body says they should be withdrawn and replaced with a single, integrated plan. Any development on the Great Blasket Island is likely to prove contentious – the owners took part in the forum chaired by former County Manager Martin Nolan which set out to agree what should happen to the island in the future. An application for a campsite which was first submitted three years ago was put on hold during that process, that has now been re-activated, along with three others for work to be done on houses. An Taisce has made one of six submissions – Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins being among the others in it, they question the environmental impact study, warning that the European Commission could take issue with it. The Heritage Body wants a full statement to accompany an integrated proposal. Planners are due to make a decision in two weeks time.
