AMAI strongly opposes reintroduction of domestic rates

The group, which campaigned last year against a hike in refuse charges in Tralee, says it would strongly oppose the reintroduction of domestic rates. At the AMAI local government conference in Listowel yesterday, Environment Minister Martin Cullen said a major independent review of local government funding is being carried out. This review, he says, is not ruling out the possibility of recommending the return of domestic rates or the introduction of a local tax to pay for council services. But Catherine Dolan of The Concerned Householders group in Tralee says they would fight any plans to reintroduce rates.
