Kerry County Council got an almost €3 million increase in funding for housing last year.

That’s according to figures released by the Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government, in response to a question from Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae.

The Independent deputy asked for the total in capital grants provided to Kerry County Council in 2018 and 2019 for the construction and renewal of social-rented accommodation.

The Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government provides funding to local authorities to support a broad range of housing programmes.

This includes the delivery of new homes through build, acquisition and leasing, as well as programmes which support maintenance, upgrades and improvement works to existing social housing stock.

In 2018, Kerry County Council was allocated €22.77 million; almost €20 million of that was for social housing building, which takes in council and approved housing body building activity and regeneration.

€60,000 of the funds was for Traveller accommodation, €570,000 for social housing improvement works, and €2.18 million in private housing grants, which include Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and People with a Disability.

Last year the council was allocated €25.68 million, €2.91 million more than 2018.

€22.3 million of that was for the building of social housing, €80,000 was for Traveller accommodation, €730,000 went on social housing improvement works, and €2.55 million for private housing grants.

The Department also provides capital funding for the acquisition of homes for social housing, as well funding for leasing homes, the Housing Assistance Payment, and the Rental Accommodation Scheme.
