Almost €18 million allocated for national roads in Kerry

Almost €18 million in grants has been allocated for national roads in Kerry.

This is up €10 million on last year, and is part of Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s National Roads Allocations for 2018.

Among the schemes to benefit are the Lewis Road Junction in Killarney, N86 Tralee to Dingle, N69 Listowel Bypass, and N70 Waterville Town Centre to River Inny Bridge.

Funding is also going to the N22 Farranfore to Killarney road; Independent Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae raised the issue in the Dáil in October calling for funds to be allocated to the suspended scheme.

He’s welcoming this and all the funding allocated to Kerry, as is his brother Deputy Michael Healy-Rae.

Junior Minister Brendan Griffin is also welcoming the announcement.

A total of €17.8 million has been allocated for national primary and secondary roads in Kerry, which is an increase on the €7.8 million allocated last year.

The N22 Farranfore to Killarney road is to get €25,000; the proposed bypass would run from the Cork side of Killarney to two miles on the Tralee side of Farranfore.

The route was originally drawn up 15 years ago but suspended; this funding will allow for a revision of the project.

€25,000 is to go to the accident blackspot at the N22 Lewis Road Junction in Killarney to design and progress a preferred option.

€1 million is going to the N71 Port Road in Killarney for construction of this scheme.

The N70 Waterville Town Centre to River Inny Bridge is to get €3.5 million for improvement of a 6km section of the Ring of Kerry.

€4 million has been allocated to the N86 Tralee to Dingle road for further land acquisition.

The N72 Forge Cross to Rathmore road is to get €1.35 million for improvement works in the town centre.

€100,000 is to go to the N69 Listowel Bypass for design and pre-construction surveys.

Funding details for the regional and local roads are generally announced in late January.
