Almost 50% of private householders own their own home.

Almost half the population in private households in the county own their own home. That`s according to figures released from the central statistics office. Of the 42,000 households in the county, over 28,000 live in rural areas. Over 6,000 houses were built in the county since 1996. This is a slight dip on house construction when compared to the period from 1971 to 1980. However just over 3,000 homes were built in the four years from 1991 to 1995.All towns in the county have seen a sizable growth in housing developments, with the majority peaking in the last 6 years. Nationally figures show a dramatic increase in the numbers of houses built. A quarter of all houses in the country were built in the 6 year period between 1996 and 2002. However there is a move towards renting accommodation, with the numbers doubling in the decade ending 2002.
