Agriculture Minister describes EC proposals on Sugar reform as too radical

The Minister for Agriculture, Mary Coughlan has described the European Commission proposals on sugar reform as too radical and unacceptable.Speaking at the council meeting of EU Agricultural Ministers in Brussels, she said they should be based on a longer lead-in time and await the outcome of the WTO meeting in Hong Kong.The chairman of Beet Committee in Kerry, Michael O Halloran was among 100 Irish Beet Growers protesting in Brussels yesterday.He fears that price cuts of up to 40% will have a serious effect on the 40 beet growers in the Ardfert area.
