Call to heed ban on dogs on McGillycuddy Reeks

Some people are ignoring the ban on dogs on the McGillycuddy Reeks and leaving dogs off their leads on mountain trails.

That’s according to the McGillycuddy Reeks Access Forum which has reiterated its ban on dogs to mountain climbers.

The ban was introduced four years ago after forty sheep were injured by dogs on the Reeks.

Patricia Deane of South Kerry Development Partnership, one of the agencies which make up the forum, said the ban wasn’t introduced lightly, on the land which is privately-owned.

She says some people are ignoring the signs, and the goodwill of landowners is being stretched:

100,000 visited the reeks in 2015 with a reported 20% increase last year.
