AA celebrtes Golden Jubilee in Listowel.

Alcoholics Anonymous will celebrate its Golden Jubilee in Listowel this evening. Three people met in a house in Charles Street in June, 1954 to found the first Kerry branch of the organisation. Unlike other organisations which mark 50 years in existence, AA is celebrating 18 thousand 262 days in the county. This reflects the motto of recovering alcoholics who take one day at a time. From those early days in Listowel, the fellowship now has 31 groups in the county and 76 meetings each week. The archive material on display this evening will show that meetings in the fifties and sixties took place at midnight because of the stigma attached to alcoholism. It will also recall that islanders from Valentia would row to the pier in Caherciveen for the Wednesday night meeting in 1974. The theme of the golden jubilee is gratitude.
