53 workers finish at Sports Sock Plant in Caherciveen.

53 workers at the Sports Sock Plant in Caherciveen are finishing work today for the last time. Last January, the company announced the end of manufacturing in Ireland with the loss of over 100 jobs. Workers at the Tralee plant are expected to finish in July. In August of last year sports socks announced 147 redundancies and the remaining 119 staff were put on protective notice. At the time Radio Kerry News reported that negotiations with an Israeli company Delta were underway with a view to selling the plant. By November the deal with Delta had been completed but the sale of the plant only provoked a lukewarm reaction locally and concern for the remaining jobs grew. In January the new owners announced the news that the plant would be phased out. Cahirciveen closes today with the loss of 53 jobs and the Tralee facility will close in July. Management are blaming ongoing losses and increased costs for the decision to shut down.
