144 public patients in Kerry currently awaiting cataract procedure

144 public patients in Kerry are currently waiting for a cataract procedure.

Cllr John Joe Cullotty raised the issue of waiting times for cataract surgery in Kerry at the recent HSE South Regional Health Forum.

A detailed breakdown of the Cataract Procedures Waiting List, as of the end of February, was furnished following Cllr Cullotty’s request for a detailed breakdown.

The data indicates 64 people in Kerry have been waiting six months or less without a cataract surgery date; 43 people have been waiting six to twelve months and 25 people have been waiting 12 to 18 months.

Twelve people in Kerry have been waiting in excess of 18 months on the Cataract Procedures Waiting List without a surgery date.

The HSE said it’s currently working on a plan to increase the number of ophthalmic physicians, which they say should have a major impact on ophthalmic outpatient services.

It’s also working on a plan for submission to the National Treatment Purchase Fund to increase the number of cataract procedures being carried out this year.
