10 Kerry students appeal decision by TCC

Ten Kerry students may be without a first year place in secondary school next year. They are currently appealing a decision by Tralee Community College to reject their registration applications to the school. Tralee Community College is focusing more on Post Leaving Cert courses rather than taking in first year secondary school students.Approximately 300 applications were submitted for the PLC courses, but only ten students applied to enrol as First Years in September. Their applications were rejected on the grounds of it being impractical to teach such a small number. The Board of Management of the school rejected an initial appeal and this was subsequently turned down by the Kerry Education Service. The KES has passed the matter onto the Department of Education who will make a final decision. The three other secondary schools in Tralee the CBS, Presentation and Mercy Mounthawk are believed to have already closed their registration. This means the ten students may have to travel outside Tralee to receive a first year education.
