horse with man on boardDermot Weld landed the feature Vincent O’Brien Ruby Stakes at Killarney this evening with the hot favourite Brooch. A wide margin winner at the Galway festival on her only previous start, Brooch was sent off at odds of 8-11 and duly delivered, but only just. In the hands of Pat Smullen, Brooch was under pressure from the country’s leading rider well before the furlong marker, and got going late on in the race to record a one length victory over 33-1 shot Akira. Smullen also gave the Killarney crowd reason to cheer earlier on this evening, when the first leg of the Weld double was recorded on Postulation in the Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. Maiden. The 1-3 favourite just did enough to hold off Archangel Raphael by a neck, completing the short-priced double for his boss.
