Mobile phone operator Vodafone claims network coverage will be greatly reduced if the one kilometre rule is not amended. Last week planners rejected applications to retain masts in Kenmare and Duagh. The original permission from Kerry County Council stipulated phone companies must apply for retention for masts every five years. However a clause in the County Development Plan which specifies there must be an exclusion zone of one kilometre around houses caused both Duagh and Kenmare to be rejected. Tara Delaney of Vodaphone says they have appealed both decisions to an bord pleanala. She claims the exclusion zone could be detrimental to their ability to provide coverage in Kerry.
