Vatican unveils memorial plaque in honour of Kerry priest

VaticanThe Vatican has unveiled a memorial plaque in honour of a Kerry priest who saved the lives of thousands of Jewish refugees during World War II. The memory of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty was celebrated yesterday at the Teutonic College in the Vatican. Monsignor O’Flaherty helped save 6,500 Jewish refugees during the Second World War. The Killarney native operated a communications network within German-occupied Rome, hiding thousands in homes, convents and monasteries. His  nephew, former judge Hugh O’Flaherty, who was present at the ceremony, says there is much to learn from Monsignor O’Flaherty’s bravery. [audio_player src=””]
