Valentia Island to lose resident priest

Valentia Island has become the third Kerry parish without a resident priest. Brendan Harrington, Parish Priest Fossa, Fr. Patrick McCarthy, PP Ballydesmond and Fr. John Shanahan, PP Valentia are retiring after more than fifty years of service each. The parish of Valentia will be served by the priests of the Iveragh Pastoral Area, with Fr. Larry Kelly as Moderator. Fr. Tom Looney is to become PP Fossa and Fr. Joseph Tarrant is to become administrator in Ballydesmond. Elsewhere, Fr. John Lucid will be PP in Kilcummin, Fr. Fergal Ryan is to be PP in Beaufort, Fr. John Buckley will be PP, Killeentierna and Fr. Joseph Begley is the new PP in Dingle. The new PP in Glenbeigh is Fr. Kieran O’Sullivan, Fr. Kevin Sullivan is to become PP in Milltown, Fr. John Kerin will be PP in Tuosist and Fr. Martin Sheehan will take on the role in Caherdaniel. Fr. Jerry Keane is to become PP in Annascaul, Fr. Kevin McNamara, will be the new PP in Moyvane, and Fr. Gerard Finucane is to be PP for Waterville. Fr. Donal O’Connor is to become chaplain at  IT Tralee and the new chaplain in Kerry General Hospital is Fr. Gerard O’Leary. Fr. Martin Spillane will be administrator in  Adrigole and Fr. Piotr Delimat from the Archdiocese of Kraków, Poland is to be CC at St. John’s, Tralee. Fr. Donal O’Neill on sabbatical and Fr. Nicholas Flynn will be diocesan secretary. Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne thanked priests for their willingness to uproot and take on new appointments in the interests of the common good of the diocese.
