The Coast Guard Coordination Centre at Valentia was last night involved in helping to co-ordinating a rescue off the Spanish coast. At 9 o clock Valentia received a MAYDAY transmission from the Fishing Vessel Novo Jundina on the medium range distress frequency. The Vessel notified Valentia that it was taking water and requested immediate evacuation. The communications were conducted in Spanish by the officers at Valentia who established all relevant details. The vessel was located approx. 40 nautical miles north west of La Coruña and co-ordination was passed to the Spanish Coastguard shortly after. Spanish Helicopter Helimer 401 and rescue boat Salvamar Shaula were tasked and 11 crew were airlifted safetly from the vessel.
