Transport Minister to view congestion on Kerry-Cork road first hand

The Transport Minister has accepted an invitation to see the congestion on the main Kerry to Cork road first hand.

Minister Shane Ross

The invite was extended by Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin who said congestion currently on the route in Macroom and Ballyvourney is holding the county back.

Deputy Brendan Griffin asked the Transport Minister Shane Ross in the Dail if he would allocate increased funding to Transport Infrastructure Ireland for shovel-ready projects like the N22 Ballyvourney to Macroom.

The Keel TD said the road is one of the two main road arteries into the county and until it is upgraded Kerry’s economic progress will be seriously hampered adding he wants it to be considered a priority for construction.

Minister Ross said in light of economic growth the capital plan which was published last year is being reviewed and within that there is a strong case for the transport sector.

Shane Ross said he is optimistic that the review has been brought forward means there will be opportunities for acceleration of projects although he could not make promises on individual ones.

He said he will certainly consider the N22 which is certainly of merit and which is needed in the area.
