Tralee General Hospital has been penalized to the tune of over 330 thousand euro for what the Department of Health terms inefficiencies. The cut in their 2004 budget is outlined in figures just released by the department. Under a scheme entitled “Casemix” efficient hospitals are rewarded while inefficient ones are penalized. Factors taken into account include the pace at which patients are treated as well as the duration of their stay. Nationally 18 hospitals have had their budgets cut.
