Tralee General is 340,000 euro over budget for the first five months of the year. That’s an improvement on the financial position at the end of the first quarter. The first three months saw an over run of 600,000. Tralee General has a budget of 54 million euro and has been warned by the Department of Health that extra funding will not be made available if they go over budget.Management put the over run in the first quarter down to increased demand on services and higher costs. Soon after, they announced the closure of a 30-bed ward for three months. This would reduce locum cover during the holiday period and help keep overheads down. This was subsequently reduced to four weeks. Compared to this time last year, the financial situation is slightly healthier – the May 2003 figure was nearly half a million in the red.
