Tralee court hears man stabbed by girlfriend’s father ended up with two collapsed lungs

A Tralee court has heard how a man was stabbed by his girlfriend’s father and ended up with two collapsed lungs.

51-year-old James Roche of 43 Balloonagh Estate, Tralee appeared before Tralee Circuit Criminal Court charged with a Section 3 assault on Emmet Tarmey on the 20th of July 2015 at Killeen Woods, Tralee.
Tralee Circuit Criminal Court was told James Roche and his then partner, along with his daughter Jemma and her then partner Emmet Tarmey had been drinking before the incident occurred.

James Roche admitted stabbing Mr Tarmey, but said it was self-defence.

The court heard Mr Roche appeared particularly frustrated by issues between his daughter and Emmet Tarmey; this relationship has now ended.

29-year-old Emmet Tarmey suffered multiple staff wounds in the incident, which resulted in two collapsed lungs.

The court was told the relationship between the two men has improved and there’s no animosity between them.

Judge Tom O’Donnell adjourned the case to the 3rd of April to fix a date for sentencing.
