The future of the sports and leisure complex in Killarney will be discussed at tonight’s meeting of the Town Council. It comes after the new Mayor called for a review of the swimming pool part of the project. There’s been a 20-year ambition to build a public swimming pool in the town of Killarney, with the committee arguing there’s no facility for young people.Last September, a fundraising initiative began to raise two million euro locally. The structure ran into legal difficulties soon after, but the committee insisted these could be overcome. By January, the numbers signing up hadn’t reached 100 and the fundraiser was dropped. The Town Council subsequently agreed to use the proceeds from the re-development of the new street car park for the 10-million euro project. However, substantial state funds are needed and there’s a view that Tourism Minister John O` Donoghue may not remain in that portfolio much longer.
