A TD has described as “disgraceful and scandalous” the apparent lack of homecare available to Kerry’s elderly and vulnerable. Independent Alliance TD Tom Fleming cited a 79-year-old Killarney man who suffered two strokes and receives just 45 minutes homecare per week. According to Deputy Fleming, the elderly man, who is also recovering from an operation to treat cancer, has only distant relatives to care for him. He described the 45 minutes per week of homecare allocated to the gentleman as “harrowing”, “unjustifiable” and “an insult”. Deputy Fleming says many elderly people feel abandoned by the Government and more investment in homecare in Kerry is urgently needed. The Independent TD believes home-help services are a “most effective means of reducing the pressure on hospitals and preventing injuries among the elderly”. Homecare investment would enable people to live independently in their communities he added. Deputy Fleming went on to say a lack of resources and investment in Kerry’s homecare system was yet “another shameful indictment of the Government”.
