Shannon Development is to follow up on around three expressions of interest in the landbank in Ballylongford. The state body called for submissions on a possible future for the land. They’re hoping for a heavy industry or marine type project for the area. Shannon Development is to assess the bona fides of each of the expressions of interest before moving forward on the issue.A spokesman says at this stage expressions are very vague and they will be looking for more detail in the coming months. The area has been designated for heavy industry but there`s a growing feeling in North Kerry that a leisure tourism project would be more suitable and more achievable. The landbank is unserviced and for any industry to come to the area a multi million euro investment programme would be required to put in place the infrastructure. Some favour a leisure project such as a golf course or an indoor facility as a more realistic option however this would require a decision on redesignation from the cabinet. Previous attempts to change the zoning have been unsuccessful. For the time being Shannon development is to follow up on the submissions.
