Theft accused more ‘a lost soul than a criminal’, court hears

Tralee Courthouse3A man accused of robbing a woman’s handbag on a Tralee street has a compulsive personality and couldn’t help himself, his solicitor has claimed. Ryan Horgan of Arlington Lodge, Tralee, had previously told gardaí he would do the same thing again if granted bail. The 19-year-old was remanded on continuing bail to appear in court again in March. Judge James O’Connor had already declined jurisdiction on the charge of robbery of a handbag but accepted jurisdiction on three other theft charges against the accused. Ryan Horgan is also accused of snatching a handbag that contained €200 and business and house keys from a woman at Bailey’s Corner on November 16th last. He faces two further charges of stealing David Beckham aftershave from CH Chemists, The Mall on September 17th and five naggings of vodka from Garvey’s Supervalu, Rock street, on April 11th. His solicitor Pat Mann said all the offences had a common thread and Mr Horgan had a compulsive personality. He said he was more ‘a lost soul than a criminal’. Judge James O’Connor imposed fines of €200 and €225 for the theft of the vodka and the aftershave respectively. He remanded him on continuing bail to March 2nd for stealing the handbag so that the loss to the victim for her keys could be quantified.
