Theft accused begs judge for prison sentence

A Tralee man, who snatched €20 from an ATM, has begged a district court judge to be sent to prison. Tralee courthouse2 Thomas McCarthy of 29 Deerpark, Manor West, told Judge James O’Connor he wanted to go jail for four months. He was before Tralee District Court on theft charges. 31-year-old Thomas McCarthy pleaded guilty to stealing three jackets from DV8 in Abbeycourt on September 1st last, worth over €230. He also admitted snatching €20 from an ATM on Castle Street but the money was recovered when its owner gave chase. His solicitor Pa Daly said Mr McCarthy had a number of health problems and shouldn’t be drinking. He said he wanted to go to jail. Judge James O’Connor imposed two five-month sentences, to run concurrently, for each of the charges. He fixed recognisances in case Mr McCarthy changed his mind.
