A 19-year-old man has told Tralee District Court he couldn’t sleep after stealing a handbag from an elderly woman on a Tralee street in broad daylight. Ryan Horgan – who was homeless and living at Arlington Lodge when the offence occurred – has since been taken under the wing of his aunt, the court heard. The woman, who was in her late 70s, was walking on Market Street at around 11am on November 21st last when the accused came running up behind her and snatched her handbag. The woman started shouting and would not let go but Horgan succeeded in taking the bag, which contained over €152 (€152.87). He also pleaded guilty to taking a bag containing €200 and keys at Bailey’s Corner on Ashe Street on November 16th, 2015. His solicitor Pat Mann told the court he was now living with his aunt in Castlemaine and helping out on her farm and she was putting €150 of his €188 disability allowance payment in a post office account. The accused said he couldn’t sleep at night thinking about the incident and would like to say sorry in person to the elderly woman. Judge James O’Connor remanded him on in custody with consent to bail to the June 1st sitting of the court. He ordered him to have €1,500 in compensation for his victims and warned the defendant that one slip and he’d go to jail.
