Tanaiste Mary Harney has confirmed that the breast check unit for the southern region will be located at the South Infirmary/Victoria Hospital in Cork. However the unit will also include three associated mobile units, which will cover Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford and South Tipperary. It’s estimated that there are 72,000 women in the target population for screening in the Southern Region.In response to a query from North Kerry Deputy Tom Mc Ellistrem, the Tanaiste said that discussions on staffing arrangements are currently taking place and that she is confident that the target date of 2007 for the commencement of the national roll out to the regions will be met. Meanwhile, the chairperson of breastcheck for Kerry, Deputy Breda Moynihan Cronin has welcomed this weeks announcement of the creation of a specialist cancer treatment centre at Cork University Hospital and a satellite centre in Limerick Regional.However she has said that it’s vital that screening is put in place now so that cancers can be detected early and women can be referred for treatment. She said that the group will be continuing it’s campaign to have breast screening delivered to kerry now.
