The controversial project to erect a statue of St. Brendan at Fenit Harbour is expected to reach completion at the end of the summer. Instigator of the project, Fr. Gearoid O Donnchadha said that the bronze statue will be in place, on Sapphire Island, by September 9th.Original plans to erect a 24 foot replica of the Saint, who was born in Fenit, were scaled back after locals expressed concerns. A twelve foot statue by sculptor Tigh O`Donoghue of Glenflesk will now be erected on a 4 foot plinth. The official unveiling of St. Brendan the navigator will take place on Sunday September 19th.
