Filming for Star Wars in Ceann Sibeál may begin later this month. Radio Kerry has learned from sources close to the production, it is hoped filming on location in West Kerry will start sometime around May 20th. Mark HamillActor Mark Hamill, who reprised the legendary role of Luke Skywalker and Daisy Ridley, who played heroine Rey in Star Wars Episode VII, are reputedly among those coming to film scenes in West Kerry. A number of beehive huts are currently being constructed on Ceann Sibéal, close to Ballyferriter village in the Gaeltacht, resembling the monastic settlement on Sceilig Mhíchíl seen in The Force Awakens. A 1.5km metal track leading to the site – which overlooks the Blasket Islands – was constructed in March – access to the site however is continuously patrolled by private security. Local accommodation providers have reported a number of ‘block bookings’ to facilitate crew in the Dingle area this month, extending into the first weeks of June. A number of local people have gained employment on-site at Ceann Sibéal – some workers from West Kerry have also been sent to the Star Wars production on Mallin Head. Last month, Kerry County Council confirmed to Radio Kerry the Ceann Sibéal set did not require planning permission due to its temporary nature and will be dismantled once filming concludes on-site.
