Skellig Michael’s appearance in the new Star Wars movie has sparked a surge in searches for Kerry hotels online. That’s according to booking website Hotels.com who say the location’s inclusion in the film has seen a 30% spike in searches compared to the same period last year. Searches for Kerry on Hotels.com increased by 30% in the period surveyed from December 18, 2015 to January 8, 2016. United Kingdom searches for Kerry increased by 160% while state-side, searches among US tourists increased by 30%. Lizann Peppard of Hotels.com said their research indicates that film-goers are intrigued by what they have seen of Kerry on-screen. This, she said, combined with the global marketing campaign launched by Tourism Ireland, has all helped drive interest in Kerry. Ms Peppard went on to describe the images of the Skelligs, as seen in Star Wars: Episode VII, as “iconic”.
