Southern Health Board suicide figures above average.

Figures for suicide in the Southern Health Board region are above average with 10 suicides occurring in Kerry in 2002. All of the suicides in the county were male according to the National Suicide Research Foundation. A majority of people who presented themselves to hospitals in Kerry and Cork with self harm injuries in the form of cuts and overdoses were amongst women. The N.S.R.F says suicide and attempted suicide rates for the Southern Health Board are alarmingly high. Programme Manager with the Southern Health Board Pat Madden says prevention measures had been put in place but it would take some time before they made an impact.
